This morning, we visited Fresh Gallery in Otara to be at the opening of photographer Raymond Sagapolutele’s latest exhibition, Mo I Tatou (For Us). The portraits that hang around the gallery form an exploration of Moana identity in Aotearoa that Sagapolutele has continued from his ongoing series called Out of Context (2015- ).

The mood at the opening was one of quiet celebration, fitting for Sagapolutele. This exhibition is part of his PhD studies, where his research extends to that of the ma’umaga/plantation in fa’aSamoa and it’s symbolic transmission of the state of local affairs.
Public programming activities add to the excitement of an artist talk on Thursday 8th February at 6.30pm and the chance to have your portrait taken by Sagapolutele himself on Saturday 10th February from 10-11am. Bookings are absolutely essential: (09) 261 8030 and freshgalleryotara@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz.
Given his preference to be behind the scenes, we were very lucky that he obliged us with this photo!
