Random Bike Rides: Robertson Road, Māngere

Last night, our director, went for a stress relieving ride so headed from Ōtāhuhu to Māngere in rush hour traffic. She tried a new path, heading past Ōtāhuhu train station and turning right into Kaka Street, which becomes Tui Street (who knew?), which then itself becomes James Fletcher Drive.

In this industrial zone, you see some pretty strange things and this was definitely one of them (see below)

She then turned left into Harania Street, which she also knew as the route for the 324 bus to Māngere Town from Seaside Park in Otahuhu. Continuing straight, she came across Robertson Road and tried out the new cycle lanes. These are comfortable, clear but still need a solid, maybe concrete barrier, to shield younger riders from moving cars.

On the way back, Louise decided to try out the Harania Marys Foreshore Reserve cycle track. Surrounded by mangroves, the track starts well on a concrete path but then quickly becomes gravel and is largely neglected. It’s a real shame and seemed to have a bright ending until a roaming and angry dog greeted Louise. She yelled, a kind neighbour called Seva moved the dog and Louise continued by riding on Mary St, turning right onto Forbes Road and back onto Favona Road.

Then it was hooning (safely) up Kahu and Titi Streets, where Louise heard this melodious singing, reminding her of her late and dearly missed friend, Fa’anana Efeso Collins, who died suddenly this Wednesday morning, serving others.

Fa’afetai tele lava Efeso for all that you were, all that you are and all that you have left behind, including your wonderful Vasa Fia and your remarkable girls ma aiga potopoto. Manuia lau malaga.
