Yesterday arvo, our director, Louise Tu’u, went to get bike-related wares in East Tamaki, south Auckland. Heading back home to Ōtāhuhu, she decided to ride the back way through Pearl Baker Reserve. The route is unmarked, which is not unusual and a bit sad, especially, as it’s mysterious and connects easily to either Kerwyn Ave via Andromeda Crescent to head to Highbrook, or going through Springs Road Reserve, which leads to Pearl Baker Reserve in Ōtara.

Above are images from Springs Road Reserve, the first indicating where a small pool of water and unmarked appears through the ground; the second showing the steps to head over the aforementioned waterway and the third, showing the stunning sunset and busy Pearl Baker Reserve playground.
Louise then rode along Pearl Baker Drive, turned right into Johnstones Road and down past Tyrone St, over the Otara Reserve up to Franklyne Road. Crossing over to Alexander Crescent near the Otara Scorpions Rugby League club, Louise turned left into Otara Road, then right into Lappington Road. This road has a beautiful green space in the middle, with an accessible playground. Louise met and chatted with another local rider, Denise, who used to ride from here to Onehunga, but stopped because of the traffic. Louise then continued riding onto Gilbert Road, back onto Bairds Road and along her favourite bike path, Highbrook Drive and Curlew Bay Road to home.
