This arvo, our director, Louise Tu’u caught the Onehunga train back from Newmarket station. To get home to Ōtāhuhu, the plan was to disembark at Penrose station and cycle home.
Two ways home: first head over the walking/bike overbridge from Station Road to Great South Road or turn left then left again onto O’Rorke Road, head straight down and turn left onto Church Street East.
She decided to take the 2nd route.

Auckland is such a delight to cycle in these back streets like Industry Road (real name) and Southdown Lane on a Sunday because it’s quiet. The sun was also shining, which always helps.
Louise then headed up onto Great South Road and turned left eventually into Mount Richmond Drive. This is because she wanted to see if she could navigate through to the Ōtāhuhu maunga this way.

There’s a stile at the end of Doraval Place, which Louise contemplated hauling her bike over but she decided against it. The area were once rugby league playing fields for the local Ōtāhuhu Leopards club but since 2019, has had regenerative planting of toitoi and other native plants.

Riding back onto the Great South Road, Louise intended to ride into the maunga but the area felt eerie about it so she went back on to the main road and headed home.

Sometimes, the adventure is just being on the bike.
