This arvo, our director, Louise Tu’u, headed into town, using the new South-City train line from Ōtāhuhu station directly to Karanga-a-hape station. It was fast, efficient and very international. There were many Auckland Transport City Ambassadors onsite to answer questions, give out free maps and other goodies and basically, be a friendly and welcoming face for the crowds. They will be here for the first week.
Louise also collected the memorabilia miniature 3D card models of each new station that opened today: Te Waihorotiu, Karanga-a-hape and Maungawhau. They were very popular and seemed to run out later in the day.
Sometimes, the trains were crowded with families, tourists, and elderly people, particularly in Te Waihorotiu. Maungawhau was an interesting station, because when you stepped outside, there were no immediate buildings nearby. The outdoor markets will open there next Saturday. Tomorrow will be the second day so we are keen to see how it operates with school kids, university students, workers and everyone else who uses and relies on the train as part of their commute.
Back from trains, Louise went for a bike ride in Ōtāhuhu to chill, take in the sights and appreciate the unique life here. We wonder what 3D cardboard model would be made of Ōtāhuhu train station or an iconic institution in the area.
